Women and Indigenous Resilience

The October 13th Paseo Artistico will celebrate Indigenous People’s Day with local indigenous artists showcasing in different mediums and genres, as well highlight the power and leadership of women in the Mission District community. Paseo Artistico is partnering with Precita Eyes and Balmy Alley Block Party to feature the unveiling of local muralist Lucia Ippolito’s new “Women of the Resistance” mural. Another highlight is a double bill featuring Ballet Folklórico Cuicacalli indigenous themed dance, paired with a sneak preview of The Medea Project newest performance “When Did Your Hands Become a Weapon?” directed by Rhodessa Jones. Paseo is also partnering with Plaza 16 Coalition to help ensure more affordable housing opportunities in the Mission.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS INCLUDE: PRECITA EYES MURALISTS, ACCION LATINA, CALLE 24, ALLEY CAT BOOKS, ADOBE BOOKS, DANCE MISSION THEATER, MISSION CULTURAL CENTER, BRAVE THEATER CENTER and The CALIFORNIA ARTS COUNCIL.

To Feature Live Music, Poetry Performances, Drawing and Screen Printing Workshops, Art Talks, Dance Performances & More

San Francisco, CA—Acción Latina & Calle 24 Cultural Arts District organizations are excited to announce the festivities lineup for a new installment of Paseo Artistico, the Mission's Free Art community stroll which will take place on Saturday December 1, 11am - 7pm. In addition to the free neighborhood art stroll during the day, Acción Latina will also present the 37th Annual Encuentro del Canto Popular that night at 8PM at Brava Theater Cabaret Stage with an eclectic mix of Latinx music and entertainment, food and drink, and art in multiple venues along the 24th street corridor in the Mission district.

The December 1 Paseo Artistico will promote the theme of Open Borders and support for those seeking amnesty at the southern border with local artists showcasing in different mediums and genres. Paseo Artistico is partnering with Precita Eyes and to feature a tour and talk by local muralist Josue Rojas to discuss his “Enrique’s Journey” mural about immigration from Central America aboard the trains. Free art classes are offerd for all ages including dance classes at Dance Mission, screen printing workshop at Accion Latina, and figure drawing class at Mission Cultural Center. Another highlight is a poetry performance by Tongo Eisen-Martin, Cathy Alrellano, and Josiahluis Alderete at EQUINOM Gallery celebrating the photo exhibition “Public Matters” by Janet Delaney. The evening will culminate with the Encuentro Del Canto Popular featuring Mission District native and Latin Jazz celebrity John Santos, up and coming reggaeton femme La Favi, the barrio groove of Almas Fronterizas, and the energy of Dj Leydis from Cuba.

The Mission community’s annual celebration of resistance through music, the "Encuentro del Canto Popular," is returning for its 37th year! For Encuentro 37 we’re doing something a little bit different: an intimate evening at Brava Theater with psychedelic Indigenous soul rockers Almas Fronterizas and Bay Area Latin percussion legend John Santos. Entrance is Free!
